MYBIGTRIP: MYANMAR, Country nº7

Before I visited Myanmar, I had listened a lot of notices about that country. It is dangerous, you cannot reach every places by yourself there… But however the main point of MYBIGTRIP was pass through the South-Eastern of Asia and Myanmar was one of the most interesting places for me, I decided to access to that country by the Northern border of Thailand, and then, move myself going down to the South back to Bangkok and from there, fly away to Nepal or India.

Get in Myanmar was a fly back to, at least, the developing level of Indonesia. The old buses, whose engines were literally watered in every stops. The brakes in red, also watered between the hot smoke that envolved the bus, they were just the visual side of such old mechanisms, that seemed they worked by miraculous forces.

But, in this trip, I have always thought “if they travel there every day, everything is ok”. So, when reaching Keng Tung after a long long down road where we advanced on a person speed, bus staff made a reverence, I had the feeling that I did not give enough importance to the vehicle conditions and for once, I thought seriously that luck placed an important factor in the journey development.

The next morning, I was informed that I could not follow my way by road. Someone said that the roads were dangerous, others spoke about bandits and thieves. I felt myself living a movie and I wanted to follow by those roads but the denial was categorical and I had to buy a flight ticket to Mandalay. It was a shame because the north was covered by dense forests and the biological diversity promised good news.

Mandalay, Bagan, Pyay… Going down south, I enjoyed in Bagan, one of the most extended arquitectural sites of the Asian South-Eastern. By kilometers there were extended temples and more temples and in the middle, an open vegetation with bushes and trees that little by little they showed me the endemics and other birds of the region.

Mandalay, Bagan, Pyay…

Yangon was an interesting stop but the longer time that I took in one place was in Mawlamyine, where I enjoyed and "suffered" the third New Year celebration in this trip, after the european new year´s eve in Australia and the Chinese New Year in Malaysia. The WATER FESTIVAL, that starts the new year in Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia, was one week where the water flow from everywhere in the street, without advice, and, if it takes you with the passport and your optic staff with you, you can get a really bad moment until you leave the staff safe at your hostel. After, when everything is safe, the party starts for you also and with the high temperature, results a blessing be watered every time.

Definitely, Myanmar is a country that deserves more time. The north forests, the desert western coast and the uncertain and thin south strip, that share the peninsula with the Thailand neighbors, they are places that, since today, they already are part f a future plans.

MYBIGTRIP: THAILAND Country nº6

Thailand has been the nexus between Malaysia, Cambodia and Myanmar, and has signed the end of the second stop in my trip, the Southern-East of Asia. From Bangkok I have travelled to Kathmandu, where I ask for an indian visa. As the pick-up date got almost a week, I took advantage to visit Chitwan National Park, in Nepal southern. That decision took me safe from the stronger earthquake that has plagued the country in such a long time.

When I crossed the Malaysian border, I looked the map and decided to go to a little town in the southern-east of peninsular Thailand. At the station, nobody understood why I wanted to go there and even the border officer looked me surprised. As I had invented the name of the hotel, I though by a moment that he realized of that but how could he know the name of all the hotels of the country? The answer came later, after some hours in a little van where the driver and a guy beside him laugh every time that they asked me about where I was going on. In that village were not any hotel or something like that, it was just four houses along the road and were not hotels in some kilometers around.

I looked the driver with expression of "what can I do?" and he, with the same laugh of the whole way, drove back and brought me by unsealed roads till we reach a kind of Luxury Resort with independent bungalows and a rustic atmosphere that made me think that my week budget was ended in just a night.

But this time luck was by my side and the prize was very economic and in the morning, when I went out to walk, the sound of birds was so high that I realized I was in a good place. Was an amazing morning, eight heron species, lapwings and many birds until a total of 50 species. I was there two nights and after took way back to Bangkok. I had to renovate my passport and I was in time to go some days to Cambodia in the wait.

Back from Camboya, in the east coast I stopped in Sri Racha and, surprise! the first gull since Australia was there between Whiskered Terns and Herons. The Brown-headed Gull. It was so glad, gulls was the group of birds that I expected easy to find and until the moment it was resisting to myself.

Days later, after I picked up the passport I took the north way, addressing myself to the border with Myanmar, where it started another world, a total different country as I will tell you soon. Be happy.

Sean felices.
