WADERS IN MYBIGTRIP I / LIMICOLAS EN MYBIGTRIP I

At this time, that most of the waders are already traveling back to the winter quarters, I have collected some of the photos of waders that I could watch and photographed in MYBIGTRIP, in the five months I was crossing from Australia to Nepal. 

En este momento, en que la mayoría de los limícolas están ya viajando de vuelta a sus cuarteles de invierno, he recopilado algunas imágenes de estas aves que observé y fotografié durante MYBIGTRIP, en los cinco meses que pasé cruzando desde Australia hasta Nepal.

Here are they. This is a tribute to all these little and fragile birds that every year in their lives they fly away up north and down south, looking for a place where to live and feed themselves. 

Aquí se los dejo. Esto es un homenaje a todos esos pequeños y frágiles pájaros cuyas vidas transcurren entre el viaje de vuelta al norte, donde crían y la huída del invierno hacia el sur.

BACK IN MY PLACE / DE VUELTA A CASA

After speaking about far away countries I have decided to show everyone living away, my place and my birds. Speak about your own place it is difficult because the routine makes you walk without looking around, without the need to look for references to go back to the starting point. So, writing this update it has forced me to see with eyes of visitor and admire again the details that become La Orotava in a charming and hosting place. Placed in Tenerife´s north, the council takes a huge territory that rises from the strong coast to the vulcan, Mount Teide, up at 3718 meters over see level. For an island with so small dimensions, that altitude gives it varied climatic conditions, and that is translated in a huge landscape uniqueness.

Después de hablar de países lejanos, he decidido mostrar el lugar donde vivo y sus pájaros. Hablar del lugar donde vives es difícil, porque la rutina hace que camines sin mirar, sin necesidad de buscar referencias para volver al punto de partida. Por eso, escribir esta entrada me ha obligado a mirar de nuevo, a ver con ojos de visitante y admirar los detalles que convierten La Orotava en un sitio único y acogedor. Situada en el norte de la isla de Tenerife, ocupa un territorio que asciende desde la poderosa costa norte hasta el pico del Teide, a 3718 metros de altitud. A una isla de reducidas dimensiones, esa altitud le otorga unas condiciones ambientales muy variadas y eso se traduce en una singularidad paisajística enorme.

The old town has many points where you can fly with the history.
El casco antiguo tiene multitud de rincones donde dejarse llevar por los ecos de la historia.

The endemic Canarian Warbler (Phylloscopus canariensis) is a small and common bird everywhere,
from the coast to the summit.
El endémico Mosquitero Canario (Phylloscopus canariensis) es un pequeño y común pájaro 
en casi todos los ambientes, desde la costa hasta la cumbre.

The north sea gets a dark blue color almost black due to the enormous depth that exists since a few meters from the seashore. When yo go away and climb to the summit, vegetation changes and becomes different when the influence of the salty coastal air disappears and you get yourself under the influence of the Alisios, the winds that push the clouds covering the north valleys and gives humidity for the agriculture. A curious phenomenon occurs when you cross through the "Sea of Clouds" and suddenly you appear in volcanic summit, a strange landscape covered by low vegetation where predominates the ochre and reddish rocks. In a short time you were swimming in the beach and now your are walking in a vast volcanic desert with impressive views. You are in the Teide National Park.

El mar del norte posee un color azul muy oscuro, casi negro debido a la enorme profundidad existente a pocos metros de la costa. Al alejarte y ascender hacia la cumbre, la vegetación se transforma a medida que la influencia del aire salado de la costa desaparece y entras en la zona de influencia de los alisios, los vientos que empujan la nube que cubre los valles del norte y aporta la humedad que sustenta las labores agrícolas. Un fenómeno peculiar ocurre cuando cruzas el "Mar de Nubes" e irrumpes en la cumbre volcánica, un paisaje extraño, cubierto en parte por vegetación rastrera donde predominan las formaciones rocosas de colores ocre y rojizo. En poco tiempo has pasado de bañarte en el mar a caminar en un vasto desierto volcánico de impresionantes vistas. Estás en el Parque Nacional del Teide.

Once a year, the streets are covered by carpets of flowers and sand of colors.
Una vez al año, las calles son cubiertas por alfombras de flores y arena de colores.

The council Square becomes a beautiful and delicate carpet of sand, a job that takes some weeksLa plaza del Ayuntamiento se vuelve una delicada alfombra de arena, un trabajo que toma varias semanas.

Endemic also, the Orejudo Canario is an unmistakable bat in Canary Islands.

In this tour, in addition to taste de local cuisine rich in fish, meat, vegetables and good wines, there are some unique jewelry in the world. The insular isolation has permitted the evolution to many species away from the original population, generating some new species as the Blue Finch, the Canarian Warbler and the Laurel Pigeons, Rabiche and Turqué. And you can watch all of them at this corner of Tenerife and around.

En este recorrido, aparte de degustar la comida tradicional rica en pescados, carnes, verduras y buenos vinos para acompañar, existen algunas joyas únicas en el mundo. Hablo, como no, de algunas aves que no puedes encontrar en otro lugar del mundo. El aislamiento insular, respecto a los continentes europeo y africano, ha permitido evolucionar al margen de la población continental a muchas de las especies que se establecieron en estas islas, dando lugar a nuevas especies como el Pinzón Azul, el Mosquitero Canario o las Palomas Turqué y Rabiche entre otros. Y todas ellas pueden ser vistas en este rincón del norte de Tenerife y sus alrededores.

CELEBRATING THE 20 THOUSAND VISITS 

IN NATURE BY PULSE.

Back in Tenerife, I look back and see MYBIGTRIP as a small jump in the time, a stop that it just brings the more significant memories to my mind now. But in the measure that the draft of the book is advancing, while I review the diary of the trip, I am going back again to moments that in other way they would have remained just in the back of my memory.

De vuelta ya en Tenerife, miro hacia atrás y veo MYBIGTRIP como un pequeño salto en el tiempo, una etapa de la que ahora, solo afloran los recuerdos más significativos en mi mente. Pero a medida que el borrador del libro avanza, desmenuzando el diario de viaje, voy accediendo de nuevo a momentos que de otro modo se hubiesen quedado en la trastienda de la memoria.

And I would like to share them with you. At this time, I will leave to you a couple of videos and some images that I recorded during the trip. Apologies for the bad level of filming but I do not have much practice. However, I think they are a vivid sample of interesting aspects of the countries that I passed through in MYBIGTRIP.

Watching the Emus walking in the field is a fantastic view of one of the most curious birds of Australia. Flightless and massive, they walk around the field and sometimes can be seen very close to the road. Even, in some places they use the streets to get a walk but that does not mean they are friendly birds. Keep yourself away them.

Ver a los Emus caminando en el campo es un fantástico modo de dsifrutar de uno de los más curiosos pájaros de Australia. Incapaces de volar y enormes, los Emus se mueven por terrenos abiertos y algunas veces pueden ser vistos muy cerca de la carretera. Incluso, en algunos pueblos, los puedes ver caminando por la calle, pero eso no significa que sean amistosos. Mantente alejado de su pico.

A walk in the Pinnacles Desert is the most similar to walk in another planet, just comparable with the termite fields or a path in the volcanic flows in the Teide Mountain in Canary Islands. 

Un paseo por el desierto de los Pinnacles, al norte de Perth es lo más parecido a caminar por otro planeta, solo comparable a los campos de termiteros australianos o un sendero por las coladas volcánicas del Teide, en las Islas Canarias.

In the afternoon, the shaded creeks of Kalbarri National Park are the best point to stay and get a relaxing night for the bird day as the Little Eagle (Hieraaetus Morphnoides). That afternoon, we were surrounded of birds in a special landscape, arid, getting in dark and silent. The distance between the bottom of the creek and the hill, was a long step that got yourself  in a moment precious and unique indeed.

Al atardecer, los sombreados barrancos del Parque Nacional Kalbarri son el mejor sitio para estar y pasar una noche tranquila para las aves diurnas como la Aguililla Australiana (Hieraaetus Morphnoides). Esa tarde, estábamos rodeados de pájaros en un escenario especial, árido, oscureciéndose por momentos y silencioso. La distancia entre el fondo del barranco y el acantilado, era un enorme escalón que realmente nos tenía atrapados en un instante precioso y único.

MYBIGTRIP: NEPAL, Country nº8

With Myanmar ended my way through the south-eastern of Asia, and MYBIGTRIP moved to the Himalayas. Nepal and India were waiting to show me their nature wonders and, behind them, expectations grown. Pakistan, Iran and Turkey would follow them. But the horrible disaster occurred in Nepal played together with the tiring after five months traveling and the unstoppable increase of temperature. At that point, and after meditate about it seriously, I decided that I will travel to Delhi in India and since there, I will take a flight back to Spain. MYBIGTRIP will finish, at least by the moment.

Con Myanmar finalizaba mi paso por el sudeste asiático y MYBIGTRIP se trasladaba a la zona de los Himalayas. Nepal e India esperaban para mostrarme sus maravillas naturales y tras ellos, las expectativas aumentaban. Les seguirían Pakistán, Irán y Turquía. Pero los terribles acontecimientos sucedidos en Nepal se conjugaron con el cansancio acumulado tras cinco meses de viaje y la imparable subida de las temperaturas. Con esa tesitura, y tras meditarlo seriamente, decidí que viajaría hasta Delhi en India y desde allí tomaría un vuelo hacia España. MYBIGTRIP terminaría, por el momento.

In Kathmandu everything went well. I resolved the indian visa in the first morning and even I had time to change my frame glasses, that were broken from the Water Festival in Myanmar. So I decided to go the following day to Chitwan, a National Park that I could not visit in my first time in Nepal. That decision would mark the rest of my trip because it will put myself safe from the earthquake that shook the country in the following days. In Sauraha, a river plain, the seismic movements were less intense and the damages minimum in comparison with the tragedy in Kathmandu.

En Katmandu todo me salió bien. Resolví la visa india en la primera mañana y aún tuve tiempo de cambiar la montura a las gafas, cuyas patas debido al impacto de los manguerazos del Water Festival en Myanmar apenas se sostenían. Entonces decidí viajar al día siguiente a Chitwan, un Parque Nacional que no había podido conocer en mi primera visita a Nepal. Esa decisión marcaría el resto de mi viaje, ya que me pondría a salvo del terremoto que sacudió el país. En Sauraha, una meseta fluvial, los movimientos sísmicos fueron menos intensos y los daños mínimos en comparación con lo ocurrido en el área capitalina.

But apart of that, Nepal gave me intense and emotive moments observing fauna during the days when, ignoring the dimension of the disaster, I used to walk on Chitwan National Park, at south of Nepal.

Aún así, Nepal me brindó intensos y emocionantes observaciones de fauna durante los tres días en que, incomunicados e ignorando la dimensión del desastre, me dediqué a caminar el Parque Nacional Chitwan, en el sur de Nepal.

Walking Rapti River, in and around the National Park, I went observing little by little, such a diversity and spectaculars kinds of fauna. The white Asian Paradise Flycatcher from my window, the massive black bear drinking in the river, the imposing asian rhino and the peafowls, issuing its screech, impressive at its natural environment.

Rodeando Rapti River en diferentes direcciones, a veces con guía, cuando penetraba en las lindes del Parque Nacional y otras, por mi cuenta, circunvalando las fronteras de la reserva, fui observando poco a poco una diversidad de fauna realmente espectacular. Ver al Ave del Paraíso Asiática en su fase blanca desde la ventana de mi habitación, al enorme oso negro encaramándose por el bancal del río después de beber, el imponente rinoceronte asiático con su armadura empapada y, los pavos reales, emitiendo su característico chillido, impresionantes en su ambiente natural.

In a wattle and daub little town, Bankatta, I spent two nights, seeing how the watch were sleeping in reed towers to look after the village and the fields. From time to time, I could hear them trying to keep away the rhinos from the village with torches and shouting to them. In the morning, you can distinguish the leopard and tiger footprints in the dry sand creek.

En un poblado de adobe y cañas, Bankatta, pasé dos noches, viendo como los vigías dormían en torres de caña para vigilar los cultivos. De cuando en cuando, se les escuchaba intentando alejar a los rinocerontes del poblado con antorchas y por la mañana, podías distinguir las huellas de leopardos y tigres en la arena de los riachuelos secos.

Those details brought me back to the readings of Salgari and other writers whose books full my youth with unknown countries and incredible animals.

Aquellos detalles me remitían a las lecturas de Salgari y otros escritores que llenaron mi juventud de países desconocidos y animales increíbles.

Back to Sauraha, the reality hit my front. We were conscious of the brutal outcome of the earthquake. The happiness and the emotions turned sadness, desolation and impotent. A bit after, I took the decision of crossing to India and take a flight back from Delhi. MYBIGTRIP, by the moment was finished.

De vuelta a Sauraha, la realidad nos golpeó de frente. Fuimos conscientes del desenlace brutal del terremoto y la alegría y las emociones que traíamos se tornaron tristeza, desolación e impotencia. Poco después, tomé la decisión de cruzar a India y tomar un vuelo de regreso. MYBIGTRIP, por el momento tocaba a su fin.

Como una ironía del destino, muchas botellas llegaron a Sauraha desde las montañas, flotando en el río como portadoras de mensajes que pidieran al resto del mundo que no olvide a Nepal, que no se olvide del "Techo del Mundo".

As an irony of fate, many bottles arrived in Sauraha from the mountains, floating in the river as carriers of messages to the world asked not to forget to Nepal, do not forget the "Roof of the World".

MYBIGTRIP: MYANMAR, Country nº7

Before I visited Myanmar, I had listened a lot of notices about that country. It is dangerous, you cannot reach every places by yourself there… But however the main point of MYBIGTRIP was pass through the South-Eastern of Asia and Myanmar was one of the most interesting places for me, I decided to access to that country by the Northern border of Thailand, and then, move myself going down to the South back to Bangkok and from there, fly away to Nepal or India.

Antes de visitar Myanmar, había escuchado multitud de avisos y consejos acerca de ese país. Es peligroso, no puedes moverte por el país por tus propios medios… Como quiera que la tónica de MYBIGTRIP era cruzar el sudeste asiático y Myanmar era uno de los destinos que más curiosidad me provocaban, decidí acceder al país por la frontera norte de Tailandia, y luego moverme derivando hacia el sur para volver a Bangkok y desde allí, volar a Nepal o India.

Get in Myanmar was a fly back to, at least, the developing level of Indonesia. The old buses, whose engines were literally watered in every stops. The brakes in red, also watered between the hot smoke that envolved the bus, they were just the visual side of such old mechanisms, that seemed they worked by miraculous forces.

Entrar en Myanmar supuso retroceder, al menos, al nivel de desarrollo de Indonesia. Las guaguas viejas y destartaladas, cuyos motores eran literalmente bañados en cada parada. Los frenos al rojo también eran refrescados a base de cubos de agua y, la humareda caliente que envolvía el vehículo en esos momentos, era solo la parte visual de unos mecanismos que por obsoletos, parecían funcionar por fuerzas milagrosas.

But, in this trip, I have always thought “if they travel there every day, everything is ok”. So, when reaching Keng Tung after a long long down road where we advanced on a person speed, bus staff made a reverence, I had the feeling that I did not give enough importance to the vehicle conditions and for once, I thought seriously that luck placed an important factor in the journey development.

Pero en este viaje, siempre he pensado: “Si ellos viajan aquí todos los días, todo está bien”. Por eso, cuando llegando a Keng Tung después de una larga larga bajada en la que avanzábamos al paso de una persona, el cobrador y el conductor realizaron una reverencia al unísono, tuve la sensación de que no le había dado la suficiente importancia a la degradación del vehículo y por una vez pensé seriamente que la suerte jugaba un factor importante en el desarrollo de la etapa.

The next morning, I was informed that I could not follow my way by road. Someone said that the roads were dangerous, others spoke about bandits and thieves. I felt myself living a movie and I wanted to follow by those roads but the denial was categorical and I had to buy a flight ticket to Mandalay. It was a shame because the north was covered by dense forests and the biological diversity promised good news.

A la mañana siguiente, me informarían de la imposibilidad de seguir por tierra. Unos alegaban la peligrosidad de las carreteras, otros la presencia de bandidos. Me parecía estar viviendo una película y quería seguir aquella carretera pero la negativa era rotunda y tuve que negociar un billete de avión hasta Mandalay. Fue una pena porque el norte estaba cubierto por tupidos bosques de ribera, y la diversidad biológica prometía buenas sorpresas.

Mandalay, Bagan, Pyay… Going down south, I enjoyed in Bagan, one of the most extended arquitectural sites of the Asian South-Eastern. By kilometers there were extended temples and more temples and in the middle, an open vegetation with bushes and trees that little by little they showed me the endemics and other birds of the region.

Mandalay, Bagan, Pyay… Bajando hacia el sur disfruté en Bagan, de uno de los complejos arquitectónicos más extensos de todo el sudeste asiático. Por kilómetros se extendían templos y más templos y en medio, una vegetación abierta, árboles y arbustos que poco a poco me iban mostrando endemismos y otros pájaros de la región.

Yangon was an interesting stop but the longer time that I took in one place was in Mawlamyine, where I enjoyed and "suffered" the third New Year celebration in this trip, after the european new year´s eve in Australia and the Chinese New Year in Malaysia. The WATER FESTIVAL, that starts the new year in Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia, was one week where the water flow from everywhere in the street, without advice, and, if it takes you with the passport and your optic staff with you, you can get a really bad moment until you leave the staff safe at your hostel. After, when everything is safe, the party starts for you also and with the high temperature, results a blessing be watered every time.

Yangon fue una parada interesante pero la estancia más larga la viví en Mawlamyine, donde gocé y sufrí de la tercera festividad de año nuevo de este viaje, después del año nuevo australiano el 31 de diciembre y el Año Nuevo Chino en Malasia. El WATER FESTIVAL, que marca el año nuevo en Myanmar, Tailandia y Camboya, supuso una semana en la que el agua, desde por la mañana hasta que atardece, vuela de un lado al otro de la calle sin previo aviso y, si te coge como a mí, con el pasaporte y todo el equipo óptico encima, te puede hacer pasar un mal rato. Luego, cuando dejas tus pertenencias a salvo en el hostal, empieza la fiesta para ti también y con la temperatura que hacía, resultaba una bendición ser mojado continuamente.

Water Festival

Definitely, Myanmar is a country that deserves more time. The north forests, the desert western coast and the uncertain and thin south strip, that share the peninsula with the Thailand neighbors, they are places that, since today, they already are part f a future plans.

Definitivamente Myanmar es una país para dedicarle más tiempo. Los bosques del norte, la desértica costa oeste y la incierta y estrecha franja sur, que comparte península con su vecina Tailandia, son lugares que, desde hoy, ya forman parte de un futuro plan.
