MYBIGTRIP: INDONESIA. Country nº2

The contrast between birdwatching in Australia and Indonesia is huge. I already sensed that since the north of Australia started to be covered with mangroves and dense jungles, but in Bali and specially in Java and Sumatra, birdwatching has converted in a hard, almost frustrating task.

El contraste entre ver pájaros entre Australia e Indonesia es tremendo. Ya se intuía desde que el norte de Australia comenzara a cubrirse de manglares y bosques impenetrables, pero en Bali y especialmente en Java y Sumatra, la observación se ha convertido en una ardua y, a veces, casi frustrante tarea.

At the jungle you listen songbirds constantly but they are moving in the treetops at a height that, when you can watch them, they are very difficult to identify. If you add to that the humidity, your glasses and binoculars are fogging every time and that when you stop a moment the leeches run to get up in your boots, identify a bird becomes a heroic task.

En la selva escuchas cantos constantemente pero las aves se mueven de copa en copa a una altura en que, cuando las ves, se hace realmente difícil identificarlas. Si sumas a esto la humedad, que las gafas y los prismáticos se empañan y en cuanto te paras, las sanguijuelas se apresuran a subirse a tus botas, identificar un ave se convierte en una tarea casi heroica.

I have visited the Pangrango National Park in Java and Way Kanvas National Park in Sumatra. Both amazing, the first at the mountains and the other at sea level. Both wild, with sounds that get you in a documentary, impressive! En Way Kanvas, still remains a small population of tiger, but I could not get into de group that will go to study them soon. Bad luck!

He visitado el Parque Nacional Tangrango en Java y Way Kanvas en Sumatra. Ambos increíbles, uno de montaña y el otro prácticamente a nivel del mar. Ambos selváticos, con sonidos que te transportan a lo más profundo de la naturaleza salvaje, emocionantes. En Way Kanvas aún se conserva una pequeña población de tigres pero no consigo colarme en la salida que el grupo de estudio realizará en breve. Mala suerte.

Scorpion in the jungle / Escorpión en la jungla (Way Kanvas National Park) Sumatra

In Indonesia, birds live under a strong pressure because the land degradation (in Java, more than 90% is built or cultivated) and they are taken to be kept in cages at home or be sold. So, places as National Parks and Botanic gardens (I strongly recommend the Botanic Garden of Bogor in West Java) become real sanctuaries for the conservation.

En Indonesia las aves están sometidas a una presión constante por la degradación del territorio (en Java, más del 90% está cultivado o construido) y la captura, tanto para mantenerlas en jaula para uso particular, como para el comercio exterior. Así, lugares como Parques Nacionales o Jardines Botánicos (recomiendo visitar el de Bogor en el oeste de Java), se convierten en verdaderos santuarios para la conservación.

Apart from birds and jungle, Indonesia leaves yourself with a desire to repeat, to follow mixing yourself with its people and discovering places where I am sure, I have not seen yet. Now, I will flight to Batam, an indonesian island at south of Singapore, because from other point I can not reach that country-city.

Aparte de aves y selva, Indonesia te deja con ganas de volver, de seguir mezclándote con su gente y descubriendo rincones que seguro se me han escapado. Ahora vuelo a Batam, una isla indonesia al sur de Singapur, ya que desde otro punto de Sumatra no puedo cruzar a esta ciudad-país.

LAST STOP IN AUSTRALIA / ULTIMA PARADA EN AUSTRALIA

Almost a month after MYBIGTRIP started, the australian journey is coming to finish. We are already in Darwin and just the Arafura Sea separates myself from Timor and some other islands between Indonesia and Australia. We have identified more than 220 species of birds already, someones so elusive as the Bush Stone-curlew, that surprised ourselves with so long legs, detail that is not reflected in the birds-guide and differentiates it from the rest of Stone-curlews that we know.

Casi un mes después de empezar MYBIGTRIP, la etapa australiana va llegando a su fin. Ya estamos en Darwin y solamente el mar de Arafura me separa de Timor y el resto de islas que se interponen entre Indonesia y Australia. Llevamos más de 220 especies identificadas y entre ellas se encuentran aves tan escurridizas como el alcaraván que nos sorprendió por la longitud de sus patas, detalle que la guía no recoge y resulta muy característico ya que lo diferencia del resto de alcaravanes que conocemos.

If I look back, everything has occurred so intensive that seems they have passed some months since we farewelled Fremantle. They have had sweltering days, when you got out from the car and thousands of flies came directly to your face. That heat was increasing to get the most hard expression at Broome. Crossing the mangroves with Roger Standen, we felt what the high temperatures can do with practically 100% humidity. The mangroves leaves were wet and my glasses became foggy when tried to focus the camera. Two hours were enough to get out from there exhausted.

Si miro hacia atrás todo ha ocurrido de manera tan intensa, que parecen haber pasado meses desde el día que nos despedimos de Fremantle. Hubo días de calor sofocante, en que te bajabas del coche y una nube de moscas se lanzaba sobre tu cara. Ese calor fue aumentando hasta alcanzar su más dura expresión en Broome. Cruzando los manglares con Roger Standen, sentimos lo que pueden hacer las altas temperaturas con prácticamente un 100% de humedad. Las hojas de los mangles estaban empapadas y las gafas se empañaban cuando intentabas enfocar la cámara. Dos horas fueron suficientes para salir de allí exhaustos.

After Broome, the tropical weather appeared. Thick forests, higher number of birds and the rain replaced the heat, maintaining the temperatures about of a comfortable 33 degrees. Since that, we have had to travel with the constant threat that the roads get flood and cannot follow our trip, in fact, we cannot get in most of the unsealed roads of Kakadu National Park because the strong conditions of the wet season got them closed .

Después de Broome, el clima tropical hizo aparición. Bosques tupidos, mayor número de aves y la lluvia sustituyó al calor, manteniendo las temperaturas alrededor de unos cómodos 33 grados. Desde entonces hemos tenido que viajar con la amenaza constante de que las carreteras se aneguen y no podamos seguir nuestra travesía, de hecho, no pudimos entrar en la mayoría de las áreas remotas de Kakadu National Park por hallarse cerradas al tráfico hasta que finalice la estación húmeda.

Maybe we will come back but, anyway, the australian trip left us excited about the amazing beauty of the australian nature, the huge distances you have to drive to change of environment and the simplicity and friendly behavior of the aussies. In a few days, everything will become a strong change in the countries I will visit: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand... You are invited.

Tal vez volvamos pero, en cualquier caso, la singladura australiana nos deja entusiasmados por la tremenda naturaleza que alberga, las enormes distancias que hay que recorrer para cambiar de ecosistema y la sencillez y la amabilidad de los australianos.  Ahora, en pocos días se impone un cambio radical en los países que vienen a continuación: Indonesia, Singapur, Malasia, Tailandia.... Están invitados.

Waders everywhere / Limícolas por todos lados

We are going to finish the year with the best sensations that we could have. After three days in Broome, discovering the mangroves that started at Exmouth and they did not abandon the coast yet, we have met Roger, a great expert of the australian birds and waders mainly. Thanks to him we have access to the best places where to watch the thousands of waders visiting every year the coast of Broome. From Roebuck Bay to 80 Miles Beach, they stay here a whole winter of the northern hemisphere.

Vamos a terminar el año con las mejores sensaciones. Tras tres días en Broome, descubriendo los manglares que comenzaron en Exmouth y ya no han abandonado la costa, nos hemos encontrado con Roger, gran conocedor de las aves australianas y de los limícolas en particular. Gracias a él hemos accedido a los mejores sitios donde observar los miles de limícolas que visitan cada año la costa de Broome. Desde Roebuck Bay hasta 80 miles beach, que como su nombre indica, es una playa de 80 millas, alrededor de doscientos mil limícolas pasan el invierno del hemisferio norte cada año.

Un unfinished coast, with pink sand beaches, result of mixing of white sand and the red dust from the land within. And, in these beaches flocks of godwits, curlews, plovers and sandpipers. Terns and gulls are together also and, till the view gets, it just seen a coat of restless heads waiting for the low tide to feed themselves.

Una costa interminable, con playas de arena rosada, fruto de la mezcla de la arena blanca con el polvo rojizo que el viento trae desde el interior. Y en ellas bandos de agujas mezcladas con zarapitos, chorlitejos, correlimos y charranes. Gaviotas y pagazas se mezclan también y hasta donde la vista alcanza solamente se ve una capa de cabezas inquietas que esperan la marea baja para alimentarse.

The spectacle is so amazing that, when the evening is gone and the light decrease to make disappear the silhouettes, it makes hard to go away and give the back to it. But tomorrow we will get into the mangroves to watch the main species of so thick vegetation so with that comfort we go back and leave our little travelers feed themselves at the huge flat sand full of life that the tide has left discovered.

El espectáculo es tan impresionante que, al caer la tarde, cuando la luz declina hasta hacer desaparecer las siluetas, te cuesta marcharte y darle la espalda. Pero mañana nos adentraremos en los manglares para ver las especies propias de tan tupida vegetación así que con ese consuelo nos retiramos y dejamos a nuestros pequeños viajeros alimentarse en las enormes planchas de arena empapada que la marea ha dejado descubiertas.
