MYBIGTRIP: INDONESIA. Country nº2

The contrast between birdwatching in Australia and Indonesia is huge. I already sensed that since the north of Australia started to be covered with mangroves and dense jungles, but in Bali and specially in Java and Sumatra, birdwatching has converted in a hard, almost frustrating task.

Bali

At the jungle you listen songbirds constantly but they are moving in the treetops at a height that, when you can watch them, they are very difficult to identify. If you add to that the humidity, your glasses and binoculars are fogging every time and that when you stop a moment the leeches run to get up in your boots, identify a bird becomes a heroic task.

I have visited the Pangrango National Park in Java and Way Kanvas National Park in Sumatra. Both amazing, the first at the mountains and the other at sea level. Both wild, with sounds that get you in a documentary, impressive! En Way Kanvas, still remains a small population of tiger, but I could not get into de group that will go to study them soon. Bad luck!

Mala suerte.

In Indonesia, birds live under a strong pressure because the land degradation (in Java, more than 90% is built or cultivated) and they are taken to be kept in cages at home or be sold. So, places as National Parks and Botanic gardens (I strongly recommend the Botanic Garden of Bogor in West Java) become real sanctuaries for the conservation.

Apart from birds and jungle, Indonesia leaves yourself with a desire to repeat, to follow mixing yourself with its people and discovering places where I am sure, I have not seen yet. Now, I will flight to Batam, an indonesian island at south of Singapore, because from other point I can not reach that country-city.

LAST BIRDS IN AUSTRALIA / ULTIMOS PÁJAROS EN AUSTRALIA

Already in Java, crossing it slowly by shuttle buses. I will need several days to do it but, by the moment I leave you some photos of australian birds. The next time, asian birds.

LAST STOP IN AUSTRALIA / ULTIMA PARADA EN AUSTRALIA

Almost a month after MYBIGTRIP started, the australian journey is coming to finish. We are already in Darwin and just the Arafura Sea separates myself from Timor and some other islands between Indonesia and Australia. We have identified more than 220 species of birds already, someones so elusive as the Bush Stone-curlew, that surprised ourselves with so long legs, detail that is not reflected in the birds-guide and differentiates it from the rest of Stone-curlews that we know.

Bush Stone-curlew (Burhinus grallarius)

If I look back, everything has occurred so intensive that seems they have passed some months since we farewelled Fremantle. They have had sweltering days, when you got out from the car and thousands of flies came directly to your face. That heat was increasing to get the most hard expression at Broome. Crossing the mangroves with Roger Standen, we felt what the high temperatures can do with practically 100% humidity. The mangroves leaves were wet and my glasses became foggy when tried to focus the camera. Two hours were enough to get out from there exhausted.

With Roger Standen

After Broome, the tropical weather appeared. Thick forests, higher number of birds and the rain replaced the heat, maintaining the temperatures about of a comfortable 33 degrees. Since that, we have had to travel with the constant threat that the roads get flood and cannot follow our trip, in fact, we cannot get in most of the unsealed roads of Kakadu National Park because the strong conditions of the wet season got them closed .

Maybe we will come back but, anyway, the australian trip left us excited about the amazing beauty of the australian nature, the huge distances you have to drive to change of environment and the simplicity and friendly behavior of the aussies. In a few days, everything will become a strong change in the countries I will visit: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand... You are invited.

Brown Falcon (Falco berigora)

We are going to finish the year with the best sensations that we could have. After three days in Broome, discovering the mangroves that started at Exmouth and they did not abandon the coast yet, we have met Roger, a great expert of the australian birds and waders mainly. Thanks to him we have access to the best places where to watch the thousands of waders visiting every year the coast of Broome. From Roebuck Bay to 80 Miles Beach, they stay here a whole winter of the northern hemisphere.

Un unfinished coast, with pink sand beaches, result of mixing of white sand and the red dust from the land within. And, in these beaches flocks of godwits, curlews, plovers and sandpipers. Terns and gulls are together also and, till the view gets, it just seen a coat of restless heads waiting for the low tide to feed themselves.

The spectacle is so amazing that, when the evening is gone and the light decrease to make disappear the silhouettes, it makes hard to go away and give the back to it. But tomorrow we will get into the mangroves to watch the main species of so thick vegetation so with that comfort we go back and leave our little travelers feed themselves at the huge flat sand full of life that the tide has left discovered.

Bar-tailed Godwits (Limosa lapponica) Agujas colipintas

CORAL BAY AND THE FIRST WADERS/ CORAL BAY Y LOS PRIMEROS LIMÍCOLAS

Coral Bay did not disappointed ourselves. Dive in the turquoise bay meant to meet face by face with a lot of fishes with different forms, sizes and colors. Any little coral rock was rounded of hundred of fishes that were entering and getting out from its hollows.

CORAL BAY

Coral Bay no defraudó.

Near to the beach, at the dunes, our first Red Kangaroo looked to us from the bushes and the Zebra Finch was flying in big groups sounding as

RED KANGAROO

We follow driving up to north and got in a vast flat territory full of ...... as totems of any ancestral culture. Dozens of kilometers after, the landscape remind to the north american western, with low mountains flat on the top.

TERMITEROS

And when we reach Exmouth, we had the first contact with waders. The coast starts to wear a mangrove dress and between the spaces that the vegetation leaves to look, groups of Grey-tailed Tattler (Tringa brevipes), some young Eastern Reef Egrets, still with the crest of chick feathers and, in the nearest beach, almost hundred of waders make us breath strongly. Eastern Curlew, Red-necked Stints, Greater Sand Plover and a lot of the previous watched Grey-tailed Tattler. The best was a Gull-billed Tern (Gelochelidon nilotica).

EASTERN REEF EGRET

GULL-BILLED TERN

From now on, these encounters will go increasing and the amount of birds will be counted by thousand till the hundred of thousand that we expect to watch in Broome. We have ahead hard days identitying and the weather is not helping too much, but it is what we have and now is moment to enjoy and follow discovering this amazing country.

Upsss, a new bird.... see you later.

After some days travelling, we were driving a lot of kilometers on the way to Carnarvon. In the evening, when heat grant a rest, fauna lean out and we can find surprises as this.

And here we are, in a rest area at one point of the road between Kalbarri and Carnarvon, in Western Australia. We have not seen any traffic signs since a long time and just some trucks, bright as Christmas trees, have passed through reminding us that we are not alone.

Some hours before, at Kalbarri National Park, the River´s Canyon kept worm ourselves from the wind fury. While the Australian Hobby lied in wait any movement that could gave him a good lunch, the Woodswallows were huddled together agains the wind. At the same time, a Collared Sparrow-hawk harassed a couple of parrots that shouting went away very quick.

A few kilometers before Kalbarri, we left one of the most amazing places that we have visited. The saline estuary of Port Gregory. A more than twenty kilometers sea hardened, formed by pink salt, with the last lights of the day took a lot of tones and incredible colors, between violets, roses and purples extended in all directions.

SALAD LAKE OF PORT GREGORY
LAGO SALADO DE PORT GREGORY

And between the dry branches covered by salt, the brave northern travellers run over the pale surface, but the wind does not leave enjoy too much. The sunset joined the wind and as in a race aginst the clock, at the same time that shadows took the details and forms of the birds, everywhere appeared new and different species. The wind increased and using the telescope became an useless task. The distances were too big to apreciate the details with the binoculars and the light dissapeared quickly. There where you looked, birds running back the bushes... yellow or grey legs, the eyebrow starts from the beak or the eye, if at least fly up we could take some information to identify them

The best was when appeared a bird lonly looked for, the Red-kneed Dotterel. As a hooded bandit, ran around some Wood Sandpipers till all of them were melted under the shadows of the night, leaving us with the honey on the lips.

RED-KNEED DOTTEREL (Erythrogonys cinctus)

We left back Port Gregory with the comfort to know that in our up north way, the amounts of waders will increase till the climax expected at Broome, but, at the same time, we knew that we were leaving back a very important hot spot to birdwatching, in an environment of a incredible beauty.

BIRDWATCHING FROM AUSTRALIA TO SPAIN/ VIENDO PÁJAROS DESDE AUSTRALIA HASTA ESPAÑA

Time is on. MYBIGTRIP starts now. From Australia to Spain, birdwatching, identifying birds, visiting National Parks, Reserves, ports and gardens, drylands and tropical forests, any place where a bird flies in a trail that will bring me AROUND 21 COUNTRIES. But, also, this trip will give me the possibility to imbue in the culture, the landscape and the way of life in all this amazing countries.

Llegó el momento. Comienza MYBIGTRIP.

The first step before ride up to north will be going over Perth and Fremantle´s surroundings and some lakes of the area. The next days we go south, reaching maybe Albany and visiting some National Parks of the south-east australian coast.

EL LARGO VIAJE DE VUELTA / THE LONG WAY BACK

Between this flight ticket and today, have passed almost three years. Time in which I have had very good moments and others not so good, but the set has meant such a big experience and a huge personal revitalization. Now, it is time to start to go back, but slow, step by step, crosssing every country standing between the faraway Canary Islands and this majestic continent called Australia. This is an adventure without date to finish, where I throw myself without rush, in the spirit of who start a long and sinuous way, and want to memorize every turn of the road.

While I am writing, it comes to my memory a poem of Constantine Cavafy that I red at Highschool:

Itaca

a puertos antes nunca vistos.

And so, with the Itacas in my mind, I start to worm the engine for this adventure. See you on the road.

PÁJAROS Y PRIMAVERA / BIRDS AND SPRING

While I am writing, a strong rainstorm bring me back to the winter that I already thought have left back. But, despite its past tantrums, the last temperature swings and some sudden little showers, winter is over and spring is here to stay. The scenario is revolutionized, birds wear new plumages, their courtships occur everywhere and the parrot´s bustle have recovered its highest intensity. In rivers and lakes, sudden struggles show the vibrant frenzy of ducks copulating. In the nest that it has been building during the last weeks, Osprey looks while broods from its privileged watchtower.

Aguila pescadora oriental / Eastern osprey (Pandion cristatus)

On the ground, the young bobtails heat their bodies under the sun and the riser chicken of the Australian Shelduck as little woolen balls, scamper on the shore. The look of their parents follows the seagull movements, that are waiting for any dismissal of them to take an easy snack, but the male takes flight when anyone is getting to close and does not leave space to skirmishes.

But by the moment, the biggest surprise is called Black-Fronted Dotterel. This colorful Plover appeared confident on the river bank, feeding itself between the algae pushed out the water by the tide. It is the second time that I observe it, but the first one that I can watch it in a distance since I can enjoy the bright red of its beak and the rest of details of its curious plumage. Soon, the first travelers from the north will be here, changing of hemisphere in their endless search of the perfect season.

Black-Fronted Dotterel (Elseyornis melanops)

I will share it with you when the time comes.

LA PLAYA MÁS BONITA DEL MUNDO Y LOS EMUS PATINADORES / THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACH IN THE WORLD AND THE SKATER EMUS (Escapadas australianas/Australian getaways)

I know, the tittle can seem exagerated. Posibly most of you know other beaches that can compete in beauty with this. I am sure that they exist but, still today, some months after to have been there, while I write this entry, I remember with a strong emotion the impact that caused to myself find that paradise in front of my eyes.

The day before I had driven 850 kilometers from Perth to Esperance, at australian southwest, with the intention to reach Cape Le Grand National Park. Under a sun of hell, I passed through the Wheat Belt, an endless belt of cereal plantations that cross from north to south the southern half of Western Australia. In my objectives it was to find a Rock Parrot, a kind of parrot that lives in the floor, close to the coast.

Between cereal plains and dry salt lakes, the relentless sun.

It was not going to be easy because it is a really elusive bird and it hydes itself quickly since the sun rises a bit. But this parrot just was an excuse to know one of the most emblematic places of Western Australia.

During the way, suddenly, one encounter made me stop. The intense sun slopped down all its radiation over one of the many dry lakes that you cross when drive in Australia. But, what made me stop was not the lake but the Emus that, as hikers in the snow, they walked relaxing with their long legs stepping on the whitish coat. So, seeing suddenly, they seemed skaters having fun over an ice coat that, surrealist, it did not melt under the sun.

Emus "patinadores" / Skater Emus (Dromaius novaeholandiae)

After so long way driving, in a monotonous landscape, with very long straights and the only one fun or try to find birds in the distance, meet yourself in front of that beach was as discover a ship at the horizon from an isolated island. Just 3 kilometers from there, a camping full of caravans with the BBQs smoking and... the beach just for my own. It was huge the number of color tones dancing in the swing of the tyde, the contrast of blue with the white sand, the low vegetation close to the sand and the reddish rocks... just beautiful.

The bad thing was that the parrot did not appear and as the sun was rising the birds were going to hyde. Who appeared was a little reptile called Ornate Dragon (XX). Curious, it hid among the crevices of the rocks to appear soon to inquire into the weird visitant.

After to spend the night into the van, in an unpaved road near of the National Park, it was time to look for a good breakfast.

On the way to Esperance, a little park took my attention and delayed the breakfast a bit more. That was good, there I found a great surprise. The Chestnut Teal was there with all its best. This encounter was the first happiness of the day. I was watch this species in Perth but till now never with full breeding plumage and there was it, relaxing and confident.

Chesnut Teal (Anas castanea)

But he best was yet to come. After touring some lakes in the area, a bit disappointed because a little breeze was creating a wave that take the birds away from the bank the shorebirds appear. Tens of Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis), mixed with some Lesser Sand Plover (Charadrius mongolus) y Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus), but the most spectacular of them was Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) with breeding plumage, with the intense red of bill, ring-eye and legs and the dark mask that characterizes. I just could do a bit with my little Canon G12, but I will go back before to leave Australia to make better photos. Whit this, at least there is the remaining test to have watched this amazing bird.

When I came back to Perth, I found a couple of places that completely surprise myself, but that is for the next time. It leaves pendent to find the Rock Parrot.

Hasta la próxima.

Till the next.

Snow Pigeon (Columba leuconota)

Beautiful Rosefinch (Carpodacus pulcherrimus)

Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher (Ficedula strophiata)

Chesnut-crowned Laughingthrush (Garrulax erythrocephalus)

House Crow (Corvus splendens)
